Jess Ellis is a ceramicist based in Leicestershire, originally trained as an architect. Drawn to the tactile and intuitive nature of clay, she now works from her home studio creating hand-built and wheel-thrown vessels with soft, organic forms.

Jess’s work focuses on vessels for flowers and plants, with soft feminine forms and glazes, ruffles, textures and hand sculpted flowers. Her architectural background and love of heritage architecture subtly informs her work, bringing a considered approach to form and structure while allowing the hand-making process to remain central.

In this two-hour terracotta workshop at St. Mary’s Works, Jess will guide participants through a simple coil-building technique to create their own handmade bulb bowl. A series of example pieces will be available for inspiration but there is scope to be as creative as you would like. The session is designed to be relaxed and accessible, with no prior ceramics experience required.

Once finished, the pieces will take a week to dry, and will then be fired to 1060 degrees. Approximately 3 weeks after the class, pots will be available to collect from Harriman & Co. in perfect time for planting them with seasonal spring bulbs.
