Eric Ravilious
Vicarage in the Snow, 1935
Watercolour and pencil on paper
Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) was a British Painter, designer and printmaker and one of the outstanding wood-engravers of his time. He studied at Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he trained under Paul Nash. He is particularly well known for his watercolours of the South Downs, as well as urban scenes of London which captured a sense of Englishness that existed between the wars. He was an official war artist and in 1942, at the age of 39, was the first British war artist to die in active service while accompanying an RAF air-sea rescue mission which was lost off Iceland.
